So I finally decided to buy a bigger hard drive. I have a ridiculous number of settings and programs that it took forever just to PREPARE to replace the thing. This morning I started work on it and just about everything I did had some kind of problem. Honestly, I've upgraded/rebuilt my computer before but today has just been ridiculous.
I don't feel like posting this on my site or twitter so I am using this forum for my own purposes! I am going to keep track of everything that goes wrong as a form of relaxation in this frustrating process.
Problem: system wouldn't boot from dvd drive to install windows
Solution: IDE drives weren't being recognized, switched them to the master IDE port, unplugged secondary media IDE drive
Problem: formatting hard drive took forever (around 2 hours)
Solution: hard drive is 750 gig. Deal with it.
Problem: after installing windows, mouse and keyboard are no longer recognized
Solution: find usb to PS/2 adapter and plug in extra mouse and keyboard...but end up using the usual mouse and keyboard anyways. Seriously, they would not work without restarting with those 2 things plugged in!
Problem: computer won't reboot properly and just hangs after windows shut down.
Solution: choose NO when asked to reboot and just shut down and turn the computer back on. I hope this isnt permanent...
Problem: when installing video drivers, the control panel would not install and I get an error every time I start up windows.
Solution: Apparently the latest nvidia drivers are SHIT and I will have to extensively clean out all of them and install and older batch.
Problem: filezilla didn't automatically recognize cpanel's ftp settings
Solution: input info manually and worked fine.
Things that DIDN'T go wrong:
-Windows updater installed every single file without a hitch
-firefox no longer runs like shit for the first 5 minutes...for now
-computer networking and media drive are already working fine (really shocked here)
Ehh, I think this worked. I am much more relaxed now. However, I still haven't fixed those video drivers and even before I started this morning, I knew these would be the biggest issue. |

What the fuck? I think you're doing it wrong. Buy a VPR Matrix and next time things will go smoother. Sure there may be a fire or two, but just throw a towel over them to snuff them out.
My problem is for some reason over the past few weeks Firefox is acting like a little bitch. Some combination of Firefox and Flash or maybe iTunes being open causes Firefox to freeze up... and then moments later brings down my entire laptop. I have no choice but to do a hard power-off. Normally I was a actually fan of Vista, but now...
I downgraded to flash 9 and that helped, but it's still happened a few times since then... |

| Yeah I'm really surprised (and grateful) that firefox now runs smoothly as soon as I open it. I could have added a lot more stuff to that list up there but the thread served its purpose. I really don't see how buying a whole new computer would have solved a damn thing AND it would have been a pretty retarded decision when I didn't have to replace any hardware. The initial issues came from the fact that I was using a new SATA drive with a bunch of IDE devices. Also I have a ton of programs and configurations. |

Good to see Vista's treating you guys well.
It hasn't been the total POS it has been to me in the past. Firefox sucked with the freezing, but I just upgraded to 3.5 which claims to be faster. |

| HA, who said anything about vista? I've got it on my laptop but the desktop uses good ol XP. There were a whole bunch more problems but I didnt bother listing them. For some reason Bit Tornado gives me an error message every time I start a torrent, but the torrent works just fine. It's annoying... |

| well that didn't take long. The "new" hard drive randomly decided to stop working last night. Coincidentally it happened the same day I had finished and uploaded 3 new drawings to my site. Of course those are super shrunk down compressed versions but at least I didn't completely lose 2 weeks of work. I'm not too happy about losing the originals of the other drawings I did this past month either. I've never had a problem with newegg before but charging me for shipping for the return sucks. |

| So I turned on my laptop the other day and noticed it wasn't connecting online. As I looked into it, turns out my Windows Event Notification Service was corrupt. A lot of other services depend on this... So after searching Google I gave in and just restored Vista. Sigh. |

that's a strange issue right there...
By the way, I meant to say FOUR weeks worth of work. I'm getting a replacement from newegg soon (maybe even tomorrow if they keep up their awesome shipping track record) but they still made me pay for the shipping. I'm still pissed about losing my work, not to mention a couple lists of things I had to keep track of. Luckily my new drawing is a whole lot better than my last few pieces so it helped ease the pain. I'm currently using my defective-but-still-works hard drive until I get the replacement and do everything from my first post all over again. |
